Episode 140 – The Princess Bride

the princess bride

The Princess Bride (Reiner, 1987) is having a bit of a resurgence in the popular culture these days. In late 2020, the cast reunited for a fun, virtual table read as a benefit. In addition to that, various actors who are fans of the film produced their own favorite scenes that were assembled to create Home Movie: The Princess Bride. All done in the spirit of fun and as a fundraiser for World Central Kitchen, this homage/do it yourself remake is a testament to the worldwide love the original film has received.

Does the film merit such love? I certainly think so. We laughed all the way through it yet again. There is a faction of film fans who say otherwise, but we’ll leave them to their own Pit of Despair. The cast and crew seem to have poured their hearts and souls into the production, and had a wonderful time bringing William Goldman’s story to life. They cherished the experience, and their dedication still shines through. The film was made from a place of love and joy, and has touched multiple generations since its premiere. Aside from good intentions, I think the film still succeeds and endures because it is well-written, well-made, and well-acted. It has something for everyone: swashbuckling, comedy, revenge, and true love! This fractured fairy tale is just lovely, and I adore it.

What you’ll find in this episode: our favorite characters and favorite performances, we spot a piece of “Spinal Tap” memorabilia, and whether this film ever had cult status, and a spot on Andre the Giant impression.
